Many visitors start here and hike north along the 8 km (5-mile) coastal trail toward Cahuita town. This route allows you to exit near food and transport.

This is the southern entry point located just off the main highway. Non-resident foreigners pay a fixed fee of $5.65 USD here. If you start your hike at this gate, you will finish near the restaurants in Cahuita town. This makes catching a bus back to Puerto Viejo easy.

A raised wooden path weaves through the swampy lowland forest. This structure protects the fragile ecosystem underneath. Walk slowly and inspect the tree branches closely. This dense area is an excellent spot to find sloths and coiled eyelash vipers.

This serene stretch of coastline receives fewer crowds than Playa Blanca to the north. The ocean currents are often stronger on this side of the point. Exercise caution if you wade into the water. Bring plenty of drinking water, as there are no facilities on the trail.
